Twitter is in peril. Since Elon Musk seized control on October 27, 2022, the social media platform has been in a downward spiral as users evacuate, entire teams are fired, and many more quit willingly rather than work under a petty tyrant.
One of many options available to those seeking refuge from the turmoil of Twitter is Mastodon. Mastodon is a decentralized social network utilizing the ActivityPub protocol to allow anyone to host their own Mastodon server as part of the broader federated network known as the fediverse.
What this means is that anyone willing to fork out a few bucks per month to a third-party host or to spend the time and energy on their own internet-connected infrastructure can create their own social network that can talk with the other Mastodon servers.
